Step-by-step guide: How do you sew the apple cushion?

Now the creative part begins: sewing. Follow these steps to assemble your cushion. Take your time, especially around the curves. Precise work produces the best result.

1. Prepare and cut the fabric: Iron your fabrics smooth. Fold the apple fabric in half (right sides together) and pin your paper pattern to it. Trace the shape and cut it out with a seam allowance of about 1 cm. You now have two identical apple pieces. Cut two leaf pieces and two stem pieces from the scraps, also with a seam allowance.
2. Sew the leaf and stem: Place the two leaf pieces right sides together and sew around the edge. Leave a small opening along the straight lower edge for turning. Trim the seam allowance at the points, turn the leaf right side out, and iron it flat. Do the same with the stem: sew the pieces together, leave one short side open, turn it right side out, and iron it.
3. Position the pieces: Place one of the large apple pieces in front of you with the right side facing up. Position the finished leaf and stem at the apple's upper indentation. The open edges of the leaf and stem should point outward and lie along the edge of the apple piece. Pin both pieces securely in place.
4. Sew the apple body together: Place the second apple piece right side down on top of the first, matching the edges, so the leaf and stem are now sandwiched between the two fabric layers. Pin everything together around the edge. Mark a turning opening of about 10-12 cm along the straight bottom edge.
5. Sew and turn: Sew around the entire apple, leaving the turning opening unstitched. Secure the beginning and end of the seam by backstitching. Carefully clip the seam allowance around the curves so the shape forms nicely later. Turn the cushion right side out through the opening.
6. Stuff and close: Carefully push out all the seams and curves from the inside. Now stuff the cushion evenly with polyester fiberfill. Use small amounts to prevent lumps. Once the cushion has the desired fullness, close the opening by hand with a ladder stitch (also called an invisible stitch).
